Wildlife in and around the Firth of Clyde
The Firth of Clyde is a vibrant region of natural beauty, best explored from the water. From scenic coastlines to hidden coves, every Sea Clyde tour offers the chance to see incredible wildlife up close.
At Sea Clyde, we proudly showcase this unique marine environment and its remarkable residents. From playful dolphins to soaring seabirds, here are just some of the incredible animals you might spot on your tour:
1. Dolphins and porpoises
Bottlenose dolphins and harbour porpoises are regular visitors. Dolphins have been known to leap and surf alongside our boat, while porpoises are a little more shy they are more abundant and often spotted.
2. Seals
Harbour and grey seals can be spotted lounging on rocks or bobbing curiously near the boat. Their cheeky nature always delights passengers, and spring/ summer we are often lucky enough to spot seal pups.
3. Seabirds
The Firth of Clyde is full of seabirds, especially in spring and summer. We can see:
Gannets are one of the largest seabirds you might spot on our tours. With their striking white plumage and sharp, pointed wings, these birds are expert divers who can be seen plunging from great heights to catch fish
Puffins are known for their colourful beaks and charming appearance, puffins are typically found on rocky cliffs and islands around the Firth. During the breeding season, these little seabirds are especially active, flying back and forth between their nests and the sea.
Kittiwakes with their delicate appearance and loud calls, are often seen perched on rocky ledges or gliding over the water in search of food.
Cormorants with their sleek black feathers and distinctive hooked bills, are frequently spotted resting with their wings outstretched to dry. These expert fishers can often be seen diving beneath the surface in search of prey.
Herons are graceful wading birds commonly found along shorelines and estuaries. Standing motionless or stalking slowly through the shallows, they are skilled hunters of fish and amphibians.
4. Minke whales
Though sightings are rarer, the minke whale can occasionally be spotted in the waters of the Firth of Clyde. These gentle giants are the smallest baleen whales, but they are no less impressive. Minke whales are solitary animals, and sightings are often brief but spectacular. If you’re lucky enough to spot one during your sea tour, it’s a moment you’ll never forget.
5. Otters
The otter is a highly elusive creature that can be spotted in the Firth of Clyde, although sightings are more uncommon. These playful mammals are often seen darting between the shore and the water, particularly in more secluded coves and estuaries.
6. Marine life beneath the surface
While the wildlife above the waterline is undoubtedly captivating, the waters of the Firth of Clyde are also home to a rich diversity of marine life. From urchins and crabs to various fish species like mackerel and herring, there’s much to explore beneath the surface. During certain times of the year, you will spot jellyfish drifting by or a starfish clinging to the rocks.
7. Coastal flora and fauna
While most of the focus is on the wildlife, the unique flora along the coast is worth noting. From wildflowers on the shorelines to coastal shrubs and trees, the landscape of the Firth of Clyde supports a variety of plant life, which in turn sustains the incredible animal populations that rely on it for food and shelter.
